Pick: Chicago Blackhawks -280 ML

The Blackhawk squad is back and in action. After their 3-2 showing vs the Sabres last game, they have returned back to Chicago for their home-opener. The Hawks have established an 8-4 record vs Buffalo when playing in Chicago. With well-seasoned firepower the likes of C Johnathan Toews, LW Patrick Sharp, and RW Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks squad should be ready to bring the heat tonight. This whole lineup is full of depth, experience, and finesse making their performance fluid and rehearsed. The communication, team-work and play-making reflects in this team’s winning record, game after game, season after season. D Michal Rozsival is out but with D Duncan Keith, D Johnny Oduya, D Brent Seabrook, there is plenty of defensive depth that is well-competent and skilled.

The same can’t be said for Buffalo. With 1st stringer defenseman  Mark Pysyk riding the IR, and with the adjustments that they’ve made since last year, the Sabres will have a slow start to the season. It’s not to say that they can’t oil their defensive and offensive machines, but it’s to say that it will need some time to develop the same kind of fluidity and teamwork that winning teams all possess.

To think that Chicago couldn’t move past last year’s last placed Buffalo squad is almost unfathomable. Buffalo has the same familiar frontmen with a starting line of Girgensons, Moulson, Gionta and the 2nd line of Ennis Hodgson and Stafford, but considering their last place finish, it’s tough to understand that this could be some kind of point in their favour.

The goalie matchup in this affair is completely mismatched. Enroth has a dismal .879 SV% vs Chicago and whether over the short-term or the long-term, stats like that are bottom tier and won’t usually get the job done. Enroth will have to play the best game of his career if he wants a chance against this revitalized Chicago squad. Crawford is a completely different story. Crawford has tallied a .938 SV% against the Sabres in his career. Crawford and the Chicago defense is no joke and that’s just on any given day or matchup, much less versus a fangless Buffalo Sabres team..

Chicago Blackhawks are playing in their season-opener and will be looking to show their fans what they’re all about and instill some confidence. If this was a team that the Hawks could sharpen their teeth on, there would be no shame in losing and we might see an upset. It might be a question; especially, at this kind of value.

That said, the Sabres are not that kind of team. This won’t be another Sharks@Kings debacle.

For the Hawks to lose in this position would be a complete embarrassment and there is no way that the Blackhawk squad will be allowing themselves this kind of humiliation in their home-opener.

We look forward to a Chicago scoring flurry that starts early and only ends after 60 minutes.

  • When CHICAGO played as Home team vs BUFFALO in the month of October: Blackhawks are 4-1 in this position.

The Chicago line was stable at -250 where Vegas set it, but to see it steam to -290 is highly indicative of the sharp interest in this contest (just like the Islanders yesterday). We should certainly question the poor odds offered on the Chicago line, but when we question the chances to win, we find that the Blackhawks ML should prove valuable.

We don’t like to pick on high chalk but there are a few factors here that allow this pick to make a little bit of sense.

To further support the chances of this pick, the best cappers within the hockeypicks.com community are in strong agreement with the Hawks’ chances here. There is no contention regarding the upset; and further, to see this amount of confidence is always revealing.

Enjoy this game folks, it promises to be a banger and will have many peoples’ undivided attention for 2-3 hours.
