We are heading down the stretch run, and I have a lot of ground to cover as we are all looking for players to fill gaps to make up for injuries and/or slumps. There are some interesting players right now, that are low owned that I think you should roster, and there is another group of players that we all expected to slow down, but haven’t. That’s the beautiful thing about fantasy baseball… when a player is doing well for the first time, we have no idea if they are just having a special month, or if they have finally arrived, and can be depended upon this season and the next. Let’s do this by position.
FIRST BASE – Justin Smoak – 88% owned
Ok – Smoak ownership has increased exponentially over the last month, but there are still leagues where he is a available to snatch up. The question is, will this continue. Major League Baseball has waited for Smoak to arrive for years, and he’s shown no signs of slowing down. He’s in a great lineup and in the last two weeks alone he’s been the fifth best offensive player.
SECOND BASE – Whit Merrifield – 63% owned
It’s a joke that he’s still available in almost 40% of leagues. He has been a top 20 overall fantasy baseball player over the last two weeks and a top 13 hitter. He’s filling up the stat sheet with speed and more than expected power. If you’re rostering Chris Owings over Merrifield, you are falling short. Whit is legit.
THIRD BASE – Travis Shaw – 90% owned
I keep waiting for this guy to fall apart and he hasn’t. The Brewers trust Shaw fully and he’s got one of the best swings in the NL. 3B is deep, so stash him if need be.
SHORTSTOP – Didi Gregorius – 69% owned
In the last 30 days Gregorius has been the 2nd ranked SS in the majors behind Marwin Gonzalez. I fully expect ownership here to skyrocket with the Carlos Correa, which would actually an upgrade based on the last month. If you are being stubborn at the SS position, that could cost you. Get Didi as he’s still available in 1/3 of leagues.
OUTFIELD – Steven Souza Jr. – 68%
This Tampa offense is sneaky good with Mallex Smith, Dickerson, Longoria, Souza and Logan Morrison. This team is also wild card worthy as of now, so snatch up Souza Jr. who has been the 12th best OF in the last month.
SPEED HELP – Old Faithfuls
Both Ben Revere and Rajai Davis have traditionally been one-category stalwarts for the last 4-5 years, and this year is no difference. Both rank in the top five in SBs amongst OFs in the last month and both are low owned. Davis is a no brainer if you nee to move the needle.
