NBA DAILY PICKS 1/24: BEWARE OF THE BACK –TO-BACK

Moving forward we are going to look at Wednesday and Saturday NBA slates with the hopes of identifying some angles that we can take that would make selecting game outcomes just a little bit easier.  We are going to tackle a select handful of games in every article with the end goal, of accurately making game predictions while factoring in the spread.

I will keep track of my record throughout the season,  with a personal goal of 70% accuracy against the spread.  Tomorrow night’s slate is healthy, but not as meaty as many Wednesdays are.  I’m going to tackle three games this for tomorrow, two of which I feel great about.  Let’s get to work.

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies (EVEN)

San Antonio has the better top to bottom roster, and is easily the better team, but let’s consider a few things here before making the easy choice.  First, they are not healthy right now.  Pau Gasol, Manu Ginobili and Darrun Hilliard are banged up, and Rudy Gay as well as Kahwi Leonard are not available.  Secondly they will be on the back end of a back-to-back which the NBA has done well cutting down on to improve the quality of play…  and it’s worked.  Currently the Spurs are at home to the Cavaliers who may or may not be a formidable opponent, but either way they are having a hard time closing the Cavs out.  Finally, Memphis is coming off an impressive win over the 76ers bringing a balanced attack led by Marc Gasol and Tyreke Evans while also getting 45 points from their bench.  There’s a good chance the Spurs punt this game, and double down on holding players out.  Double check tomorrow, but you are officially on notice.

Boston Celtics at LA Clippers (EVEN)

The Celtics battled the Lakers on Tuesday night and go up against a Clippers team that should be at full strength.  The Clippers who had an emotional and intense win over Golden State over the weekend looked zapped in their loss against the Timberwolves on Monday night.  Now the Celtics come in  losers of three straight and possibly a fourth depending on how the Lakers game goes.  Either way the too are on the back end of a back-to-back in this one, and I see no reason NOT to pick on and against them in this one.

Philadelphia -5 vs Chicago

The 76ers have covered in every victory they’ve had so far this year… and I expect a bounce back game from them in this one.  They are coming off a heart breaking road loss to the Grizzlies and also lost a close one to Chicago earlier in the year.  They match up will against the Bulls however, and the size and athleticism the 76ers have up front should be enough.  Both teams are well rested and healthy, but the 76eers at full strength should be able to lock up Lauri Markkanen who won’t be able to catch them off guard in this one.

Have a great week gamers.
