NFL PRE-SEASON DIVSIONAL BREAKDOWN:  NFC SOUTH

By Des Boodam

CAROLINA PANTHERS

  • Over/Under: 9
  • 2017 Record: 11-5
  • Fantasy Stud: Christian McCaffery
  • Fantasy Bounce Back: Greg Olson
  • Fantasy Injury Watch: Cam Newton
  • Fantasy Plague Play:  C.J Anderson
  • Fantasy Value Play: Devin Funchess

PREDICTION: Every season we never can quite put our finger on the identity of this team.  Player turnover is high, but they are well coached.  The offense goes as Cam Newton does, and it’s essential that’s he’s healthy and upright.  If he’s off, just a bit it’s over.  I believe he enters this season at 100% and the offense is stacked.  Greg Olsen is back and healthy as well.  Devin Funchess has a defined roll, and Christian McCaffery under this new OC, will be light’s out.  If you can get him in the third do it.  Don’t fall for the C.J. Anderson trap either.  This will be a tough and tight division so I’m taking the over with final record of 10-6.

Atlanta Falcons

  • Over/Under: 9
  • 2017 Record: 10-6
  • Fantasy Stud: Matt Ryan
  • Fantasy Bounce Back: Tevin Coleman
  • Fantasy Injury Watch: Devonta Freeman
  • Fantasy Plague Play: Julio Jones
  • Fantasy Value Play: Calvin Ridley

PREDICTION: I think that Vegas has it right, putting both Atlanta and Carolina at 9 wins – but I do think this is the toughest division in the NFL with three elite QBs, three stacked offenses and three improved defenses.  Atlanta is no different.  Matty Ice has a full stockade of weapons, including Calvin Ridley who is a must draft in keeper leagues and a definite late round flyer.  I love Devonta Freeman, but his style of running leaves him prone to injury.  That’s why Tevin Coleman is an absolute must as a handcuff.  The exit strategy for Julio Jones is in place.  He doesn’t get enough targets in the red zone.  I can’t figure it out, but he’s an over paid decoy in the red zone.  Atlanta is a legit contender and I’m giving them one more W than Vegas as they finish 10-6.

New Orleans Saints

  • Over/Under: 9.5
  • 2017 Record: 11-5
  • Fantasy Stud: Alvin Kamara
  • Fantasy Bounce Back: Cameron Meredith
  • Fantasy Injury Watch: Mark Ingram
  • Fantasy Plague Play: Drew Brees
  • Fantasy Value Play: Michael Thomas

PREDICTION: This team is ready to roll, with a full arsenal on offense and a beefed up defense.  Alvin Kamara isn’t going to sneak up on anyone this year so expectations should be reasonable.  I love Drew Brees the player, but what you saw last year is not going to get better.  The defense is better, and there are a let less shootouts and way more reliance on the running game.  Good for New Orleans, bad for Drew Brees fantasy apologists.  The addition of Cameron Meredith from Chicago is huge, and I expect this team to finish with a 10-6 record.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

  • Over/Under: 6.5
  • 2017 Record: 5-11
  • Fantasy Stud: I Don’t Think So
  • Fantasy Bounce Back: Mike Evans
  • Fantasy Injury Watch: None
  • Fantasy Plague Play: Everyone Not Named Mike Evans
  • Fantasy Value Play: Cameron Brate if you are desperate

PREDICTION: It’s not just me, the fantasy community has no respect for this team and it’s well deserved.  The Bucs are daily fantasy GPP plays only.  Mike Evans will be as consistent as any WR1 in the league, but you are going to have to pay a ton for him in every format.  I don’t trust Jameis Winston nor a team that thinks he would be a worthy franchise QB given his track record at FSU.  This is a sinking ship with Jacquizz Rogers at the RB1.  Run… run far!!  I’m taking the under on this team.
