WORLD SERIES OF HANDICAPPING WEEK 2: CONSENSUS PICS (1 of 2)

By Des Boodam

I believe week 2 is the most difficult weeks of the season to actually handicap.  A one game sample is hardly enough to stake your wealth on, so that’s why we are thankful for the WSOH contest.  This appears to me to be a juicy slate, but as we’ve learned, things aren’t always what they seem, so I’ll try to be really intentional with my analysis to see where WSOH contest participants could potentially direct their efforts towards.  I  have a lot of thoughts on a bunch of games, so I’m going expand coverage this week as the injury report for each team just came out and my thoughts have swayed ever so slightly.

NEW YORK GIANTS +3 at DALLAS COWBOYS

This seems like an easy pick, as the Cowboys only put up 8 points on the road and the Giants seem fully loaded on defense.  The field loves this game more than any other, but I’m sensing some smoke and mirrors here.   First off both the Giants and the Cowboys played tough defenses and the Giants were at home.  Eli Manning looked average and the O-line looked even worse.  Saquon Barkley averaged only 2.3 ypc without his big run and Leonard Fournette on the other side left with an injury.  The Dallas defense is playoff caliber, and the Cowboys still have Zeke.  I’m not saying the field is wrong, I’m just saying the outcome is not as obvious as one would expect.  The Cowboys are at home after all, and though I do think the Giants will win, there are many other games that I am more confident about. Giants 20 Cowboys 17.

HOUSTON TEXANS +2 at TENNESSEE TITANS

Houston was handled by the Patriots but no dominated.  Defensively they were fine and their offense with Deshaun Watson was slow and unorganized at times.  I don’t like the dual QB strategy rumored to happen on the TENNESSEE side of the offense, and for that I’m going with an easy HOU cover.  Texans  27 Titans 17

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS -2 at JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The Patriots are an interesting team this season, and are designed to compete in every game.  This season however, they are taking a Jags team on the road to ring, for what is going to be an epic battle that the Jags will win.  This is their Super Bowl, and revenge is on their minds.  The Jags defense is for real, and their offense is serviceable.  I believe they will win this game straight up in a nail biter.

Jacksonville 20 New England 17.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES -3 at TAMPA BAY

The Eagles bring a top rated defense to go against what was an explosive offense last week.  I believe that Ryan Fitzpatrick and company can’t keep this up, so I’m betting on an Eagles cover in this one.  I do think the WR corp for the Bucs is much better, so no blowout here.  EAGLES 27 TAMPA BAY 17.
