The Canadian Football League (CFL) kicked off its highly anticipated 2023 season with a thrilling Week 1 that featured four captivating matchups. The Alouettes’ defense displayed its strength, intercepting RedBlacks’ quarterback Nick Arbuckle three times. Cody Fajardo, the Alouettes’ quarterback, showcased his arm talent, throwing for 261 yards. Receiver Austin Mack had a standout performance, reeling in four receptions for 62 yards. Despite the loss, Ottawa’s Devonte Williams put up a solid performance, rushing for 36 yards and making three receptions for 58 yards.
In a hard-fought defensive battle at Commonwealth Stadium, the Saskatchewan Roughriders edged out the Edmonton Elks with a 17-13 victory. Quarterback Taylor Cornelius led the Roughriders’ offense, throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown. The star of the game, however, was Eugene Lewis, who showcased his explosive playmaking abilities with five receptions for a remarkable 148 yards, including a spectacular 102-yard touchdown reception. The Roughriders’ defense made key stops and secured the win.
