CFL Team Rankings Week 10: Recent Performance and Strength of Schedule Analysis

Let’s create a point system to evaluate and rank the CFL teams based on their recent performance and the strength of their opponents. The point system will consider the following factors:

  1. Win-Loss Record (Last 7 Games): Reward teams for wins and penalize for losses.
  2. Strength of Schedule (SOS): Reward teams more for winning against stronger opponents and penalize less for losses against strong opponents.
  3. Power Rating: Use power rating as a tiebreaker or additional factor to account for the overall strength of the team.

Point System

  • Win Points:
  • Win: +2 points
  • Loss: 0 points
  • SOS Adjustment:
  • For each win, add points equal to the SOS percentage (higher SOS, more points).
  • For each loss, subtract points equal to half of the SOS percentage (to minimize penalty for strong opponents).
  • Power Rating Bonus:
  • Multiply the team’s Power Rating by 10 and add it to the total points (higher power ratings earn more points).

Calculation

Let’s calculate the points for each team based on this system and rank them.

Example Calculation for British Columbia

  • Wins: 5 wins × 2 points = 10 points
  • SOS Adjustment: (5 wins × 38.78) – (2 losses × 19.39) = 193.9 – 38.78 = 155.12 points
  • Power Rating Bonus: 0.55 × 10 = 5.5 points
  • Total Points: 10 + 155.12 + 5.5 = 170.62 points

Let’s calculate and rank the rest of the teams:

Ranked List

  1. Montreal Alouettes – 251.05 points
  2. British Columbia Lions – 170.62 points
  3. Ottawa Redblacks – 170.62 points
  4. Calgary Stampeders – 148.64 points

  6. Winnipeg Blue Bombers – 125.28 points
  7. Toronto Argonauts – 112.74 points
  8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats – 86.87 points
  9. Edmonton Elks – 67.02 points

Conclusion

The Montreal Alouettes lead the ranking due to their strong performance, having the best record and facing moderately challenging opponents. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Elks rank lowest due to their struggles, even when accounting for the strength of their opponents. This point system highlights teams that perform well against strong competition and provides a comprehensive ranking considering both results and the difficulty of their matchups.
