NFL Teams Needs and Wants for 2026?

DATE: Monday, April 20, 2026
LOCATION: ATS Stats HQ (America/Toronto)
EVENT: 2026 NFL Draft (Thursday, April 23)
VENUE: Pittsburgh, PA

The lights are about to go up in the Steel City. This Thursday, April 23rd, the NFL descends on Pittsburgh for a draft that could shift the power balance in both conferences for the next decade. At ATS Stats, we don’t just watch the picks; we track the market moves, the Value and Percentage Play (VPP), and the high-level metrics that tell you where the “smart money” is leaning before the commissioner even steps to the podium.

Whether you’re looking for franchise-altering players or just trying to find an edge in the prop markets, understanding the distinction between a team’s NEEDS (essential roster holes) and WANTS (luxury upgrades or stylistic fits) is the key to winning your draft board.

SECTION 1: THE HIGH STAKES (THE TOP OF THE BOARD)

The top of the 2026 draft is essentially a three-horse race for the headlines, but the betting market suggests the drama starts after the first name is called.

PICK TEAM PROJECTED NEED TOP MARKET CANDIDATE ODDS
#1 Las Vegas Raiders QB / WR1 Fernando Mendoza -21236
#2 New York Jets QB Arvell Reese -287
#3 Arizona Cardinals EDGE / DT David Bailey -139
#4 New Orleans Saints RB / Playmaker Jeremiyah Love -153
#5 New York Giants Secondary/Hybrid Sonny Styles +135

SITUATIONAL CONTEXT:

  • Raiders (#1): Total rebuild mode. The market has Fernando Mendoza as a statistical lock (-21236). Coming off a season where the passing game vanished, Mendoza represents the highest C.O.W. (Chance of Winning) metric for a franchise reset.
  • Jets (#2): Despite the Geno Smith experiment, the Jets are in a “Need vs. Want” tug-of-war. They need a long-term signal-caller, but they want a generational weapon to pair with Garrett Wilson. Arvell Reese currently holds the inside track for the second overall slot.

SECTION 2: TEAM-BY-TEAM “NEEDS AND WANTS” BREAKDOWN

NEW YORK JETS

  • NEED: A franchise quarterback who can actually survive a MetLife winter. With the #2 pick, the “Need” is obvious. Arvell Reese is the favorite here (-287), but don’t ignore the noise around the wideout room.
  • WANT: Offensive playmakers. The Jets’ brain trust wants to recreate the “Three-Headed Monster” approach. If they pivot or trade back, keep an eye on Carnell Tate (-275 for 1st WR selected).
  • VPP ANGLE: BULLISH on offense in the first round.

DALLAS COWBOYS

  • NEED: Defensive resuscitation. After a collapse in late 2025, the Cowboys need LB depth and secondary help. They have two first-rounders to play with.
  • WANT: A defensive “Pillar.” They want a game-wrecker. Sonny Styles (-117 to go Top 5) is the prototype they crave.
  • VPP ANGLE: NEUTRAL on offense; strongly BEARISH on current LB stability. Dallas is expected to hammer the defense in the first 48 picks.

NEW YORK GIANTS

  • NEED: Interior Offensive Line (IOL) and Defensive Tackle (DT). Following Dexter Lawrence’s trade request, there is a massive void in the middle of that front.
  • WANT: A long-term QB answer. While the trenches are a disaster, the “Want” for a sexy QB pick is always hovering over East Rutherford.
  • HANDICAPPING TIP: Look at the 1st Offensive Line Selected market. Francis Mauigoa is a heavy -268 favorite. The Giants are a prime landing spot.

BUFFALO BILLS

  • NEED: A true WR1. The Bills have been piecing it together with “good” receivers, but they lack a “great” one.
  • WANT: Defensive depth to shore up the aging secondary.
  • MARKET MOVE: Carnell Tate is the + odds favorite to be the first wideout off the board. If Buffalo moves up, he’s the target.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

  • NEED: Edge rush and a secondary receiving option.
  • WANT: A “Franchise Pillar” at Guard or Corner.
  • SITUATIONAL STAT: Miami holds picks #11 and #30. Historically, they favor high-ceiling Edge players in this range.

SECTION 3: THE RAYMOND REPORT ANALYTICAL EDGE

When handicapping the draft, we utilize the Artificial Intelligence Picks League (AIPL) methodology. The AIPL isn’t just about picking winners; it’s a franchise model where users can buy and own a “Capper Franchise.” You can run it in Manual Mode (you make the calls) or Auto Pilot Mode (our proprietary AI handles the data). In a volatile market like the NFL Draft, having a data-driven “capper” in your corner is the difference between a winning ticket and a “what happened?” moment.

WHERE IS THE SMART MONEY? (TOP PROP MARKETS)

1. FIRST CORNERBACK SELECTED (EXCLUDING CALEB DOWNS)

  • Mansoor Delane (-1081): This is a clinical play. The tape matches the metrics. Delane has been a “Value” play all spring, but the window is closing as the juice climbs.
  • Jermod McCoy (+666): The high-variance alternative. If a team values raw speed over Delane’s technical prowess, McCoy provides massive ROI.

2. FIRST OFFENSIVE LINE SELECTED

  • Francis Mauigoa (-268): Massive C.O.W. (Chance of Winning) here. The offensive line market is top-heavy, and Mauigoa is the only prospect with a “Plug-and-Play” Grade A rating across all metrics.
  • Spencer Fano (+211): The “sleeper” for a team picking in the #7 to #10 range.

3. TO BE DRAFTED TOP 10

  • Sonny Styles (-5000): Virtually guaranteed.
  • Jeremiyah Love (-4500): Market lock.
  • Mansoor Delane (-135): This is where the value lives. If you believe the defensive run starts early, -135 is a gift for a Top 10 talent.

SECTION 4: THE WORLD SERIES OF HANDICAPPING (SEASON 13)

While the draft is the focus this week, remember that the World Series of Handicapping is the marathon, not a sprint. For a $25 entry fee, you can put your NFL knowledge to the test. You make 7 picks a week for 18 weeks. The draft is the first step in building your “mental roster” for the 2026 season. If you can predict the impact of these rookies, you’re already ahead of the curve for the cumulative leaderboard.

CONCLUSION: PITTSBURGH PREVIEW

Pittsburgh is a “Football First” city, and this draft will reflect that. We expect a heavy emphasis on the trenches and defensive secondary after the initial QB flurry. The ATS Stats database shows that teams picking in the Top 5 often succumb to “Needs” while teams in the 10-20 range are more likely to chase their “Wants.”

THE RAYMOND REPORT TOP 5 BETTING OPTIONS FOR DRAFT NIGHT:

  1. Mansoor Delane to be 1st CB Selected (-1081).
  2. Fernando Mendoza #1 Overall (-21236) – Parlay Piece only.
  3. Carnell Tate 1st WR Selected (-275).
  4. Francis Mauigoa 1st OL Selected (-268).
  5. Under 2.5 Quarterbacks in the Top 10 (Check local markets for current price).
